Deep nitriding—contact and bending strength of gears with increased nitriding hardening depth

Abstract The load carrying capacity of gears can be significantly increased by nitriding. However, the required nitriding hardening depth depends on stress level and gear size. In order to achive a high fatigue resistance durability nitrided an adequate is necessary. industrial practice, (NHD) about 0.6 mm currently regarded as upper limit that reached within reasonable time cost. This also limits gears, in particular with increasing sizes. Therefore, case main treatment used sizes, although provides some advantages over hardening. depth, significant increase for medium larger sizes could expected, which will discussed this publication. evaluate expected potential NHD ≈ 0.8 1.0 (deep heat treatment) made out materials 31CrMoV9 (1.8519), 30CrNiMo8 (1.6580) 32CDV13 (alloy aerospace applications according AIR 9160), experimental investigations were carried out, Both, tooth root bending strength flank investigated.
